WHO IS MY NEIGHBOUR?
This question was put to Jesus and caused him to tell the story of the Good Samaritan. In the story Jesus tells of a man who fell victim to robbers and, whilst others passed by on the other side of the road and ignored him, only a Samaritan who was of a different race and religion, went to his aid and did what he could to help him.
Perhaps in the present crisis we should all ask ourselves this same question "Who is my neighbour?" Today the world stands aghast at the atrocities being committed against innocent people including women and children. Over a million children are now in refugee camps in other countries and still the refugees stream in having lost loved ones, their homes their possessions and native country.
We should all learn from the lessons of history. Prior to the outbreak of the 2nd world war, stories were emerging from Germany about terrible slaughter being wreaked on their own citizens. The world stood by and did nothing. Finally the full force of such evil was unleashed in Europe and only then did the world awake to the danger and experienced one of the bloodiest wars in history.We all know of the Holocaust when over one million men, women and children were sent to the gas chambers. We cannot believe that one human being could do this to another but now we have chemiical weapons which makes the killing of others so much easier. It is up to our world leaders to discover which side was responsible for this carnage and take appropriate action.
In the story of the Good Samaritan Jesus shows that compassion must not be confined to one's own race, religion or nationality. One of the Principles of Spiritualism is "The Brotherhood of Man" which means we are all one family and what affects one member of the family is felt by other members. Let us not be like those who pass by on the other side, who are uninterested unless it affects them personally. Remember the God notes our every act of compassion "Inasmuch as ye have done it to the least of these my brethren ye have done it unto me." [Matt. 25:40]
When we all cross to the next world every single one of us will face a judgment on the life we have led. There will be those who have committed evil deeds as well as those who stood by and did nothing to stop them. Let us not be as one of these. Some time ago I wrote an article called "I have no hands but your hands" in which I said I asked God why He did not step in and take action against evil acts and I got the answer "I have no hands but your hands." So it is up to us to bring about an end to this terrible situation and let us all pray that the leaders of our world be guided to make the right decisions and take the right actions to restore peace.
